Idumea

May 31, 2021

My 5/29 posting “The hairy and the smooth” is about (among other things) a story from the biblical book of Genesis, about two fraternal twins, Esau the hairy brother and Jacob the smooth one — Esau also known as Edom, Jacob as Israel. Edom is the Semitic version of the name, Latinized as Idumea / Idumaea. Both Edom and Idumea gave their names to the lands of their descendants. From Wikipedia as quoted in my 5/29 posting:

Edom and Idumea are two related but distinct terms which are both related to a historically-contiguous population but two separate, if adjacent, territories which were occupied by the Edomites / Idumeans in different periods of their history.

My 5/29 discussion then turned to the shapenote song Edom. It turns out that the Sacred Harp has not only Edom (SH200), but also Idumea (SH47b), both song names from the placenames.  Edom is joyous, but Idumea is something altogether different: by turns, powerful, moving, dark, mournful, literally apocalyptic, and shivery, a package that has has made it a great favorite of folk singers. Music from the Denson Sacred Harp (1991 revision):

(#1) SH47t Primrose and SH47b Idumea — both from the early flowering of shapenote music in the South in the early 9th century, both on salvation and resurrection, in Primrose (in A major) merely joyous; in Idumea (in A minor), triumphant, as part of the Apocalypse  — texts from two amazingly prolific writers of hymn texts, Isaac Watts in Primrose, Charles Wesley in Idumea

The Raw and the Cooked

May 30, 2021

The title of the first book of Claude Lévi-Strauss’s monumental 4-volume work Mythologiques — a title that served as the model for the title of my posting yesterday, “The hairy and the smooth” (referring to male body types) — one of three conceptual oppositions treated in that posting, the other two being raw – refined (referring to crudeness, naturalness, or simplicity vs. artfulness, in the presentation of these bodies in underwear ads) and authentic – synthetic (referring to natural materials, like leather, vs. various imitations, mostly based on plastics, in the garments the models are wearing).

The hairy and the smooth

May 29, 2021

(Much attention to men’s bodies, wearing nothing but what’s billed as fetishwear / kinkwear. Not over the raunch line, but possibly not to some readers’ tastes.)

It starts with some photos of ensembles of bulldog harness plus jockstrap, all in high-macho black, but differing in significant details — of the model’s body, the way his body is displayed in the photos, and the garments he is wearing. With respect to the oppositions

hairy – smooth
raw – refined
authentic – synthetic

Customer care and the holiday weekend

May 28, 2021

(Includes discussion of sexual acts in very plain terms, with an illustration, so totally not for kids or the sexually modest.)

A message on 5/25 (anticipating the US holiday Memorial Day) from an American company, edited so as to avoid identifying the company or its nature:

(#1) The crucial phrase in the mailing — look at the small print — is for all of your servicing needs, because of the ambiguity in the verb service in it

Being the sort of person that I am, I first read this (with considerable enjoyment) as using the sexual verb service, so I was dismayed that from May 29th though the 31st the company would not be available to provide me with the sexual attentions I might crave; its website would scarcely suffice as a replacement for personal care.

Grandma Rose knows

May 26, 2021

In the One Big Happy strip from 4/30, Ruthie explains, impishly, that there’s a name for her grandma’s special brand of perceptiveness:

Even better, that name rhymes with the historical model for nouns in –dar, denoting ‘the ability to detect some quality’ (like having dyed gray hair)

More bears in the woods

A Leigh Rubin Bears in the Woods cartoon from a few years ago:

(#1)

A follow-up to my 11/1/19 posting “Bears in the Woods”, which had 5 cartoons on the theme of bears shitting in the woods, including a Bizarro that is similar in spirit to the Rubin above.

The Ecstasy of St. Atlas

May 24, 2021

(Much about men’s bodies and sex between men, in plain language — not suitable for kids or the sexually modest.)

An ad on my Facebook page yesterday, with (as caption) its teaser copy:

(#1) Now selling the Cellblock 13 Atlas Jockstrap / Harness at Jockstraps.com. If you are looking for a light-weight, affordable elastic harness and jock then check out this all new product

The model’s body and face, the (bulldog) harness, and the jockstrap are all hot (in my view as an appreciator of the underwear ad genre). But then the lines the harness and jockstrap form in the photographer’s composition make for a pleasing abstract composition on their own. And the model’s posture, his gestures, and his facial expression are all satisfyingly packed with allusions to art, both high art and popular art.

Harnessing up for Pride

May 21, 2021

(Plain-talk references to men’s bodies and sex between men, so not suitable for kids or the sexually modest.)

Just 10 more days till Memorial Day, one of the two secular holidays bracketing the summer holiday season in the US (Labor Day is at the other end). This year Memorial Day is on the latest possible day, May 31st, so that we’ll move immediately from Spring into Pride, from May into Gay.

For Pride Month, the Daily Jocks DJX Trough line — as in piggies at the trough — now offers an annual ensemble of rainbow-themed homowear: a harness, a bottom garment of some sort, and some big butch socks.

This year’s ensemble, which came in my e-mail on 5/3. Then last year’s. And then some other rainbow harnesses, to go along with the rainbow underwear I’ve posted about over the years (there’s an inventory of these in a Page on this blog).

Fun fetishwear

May 20, 2021

(Men displaying their bodies in underwear ads, leading to men in revealing leather, engaged in kinky sex — not suitable for kids or the sexually modest.)

Fun fetishwear for gay men, from the new brand Vaux. From the ad copy on Daily Jocks:

Vaux brings fetishwear inspiration from Cellblock13 & pairs this with fun prints to add a new twist to your underwear drawer.

and on the International Jock site:

From the makers of Timoteo and CellBlock 13: conceived during a visit to the Vauxhall district of South London, VAUX is a new brand created for and inspired by the diverse and ever-evolving queer community.

and, with more detail, on the Men and Underwear site, “Jockstraps and Matching Harnesses by VAUX and Cellblock13 at jockstraps.com” on 8/20/20:

The VAUX VX2 Harness is designed to accentuate your back and show off your chest. It is made of high-quality coated and printed neoprene with spandex piping in contrasting colours. This is a structured harness with adjustable snaps for fit and comfort. Two adjustable straps come down your torso, with metal hoops and hooks that connect to either your jeans or to Vaux VX2 Zipper Jock for a full gear look. The torso straps can also be removed if you choose to wear it strictly as an upper body harness. [There are also facemasks.]
