Two, nocturnal and dactylic
March 31, 2015More plurals in compounds
March 31, 2015From Jon Lighter to ADS-L on the 29th, under the heading “hypercorrect pluralization of attributives”, this posting (in its entirety):
(1) CNN is talking about “the Houthis rebels.”
(2) I’ve recently heard “the movies industry.”
(3) Plus (I hope you’re sitting down) “the aircrafts industry.”
Three examples of different sorts (though (2) and (3) are closely related, and (1) is more distantly connected to (2)). There’s a history here on ADS-L, going back at least to 2003. First, some notes on the examples; then a bit of the ADS-L history; then more on plurals in compounds.
Jacob Lawrence
March 30, 2015(About art rather than language.)
On the KQED site on the 28th, this exhibition announcement, “The Strange and Beautiful World of Jacob Lawrence” by Sarah Hotchkiss:
Despite the exhibition’s opening date of April 1, Promised Land: Jacob Lawrence at the Cantor is no joke. An impressive group of nearly 60 works by the 20th-century American painter Jacob Lawrence celebrates a gift from the Kayden Family. With this, the Cantor [Museum at Stanford] is now home to one of the largest museum collections of Lawrence’s work.

Still more news for penises
March 30, 2015In previous instalments: “The news for penises” of 9/14/11; and “More news for penises” of 4/23/13. And now another bundle of stories: on the first successful penis transplant; on the Banana Bunker, a container for a single banana; and on a fashion article featuring “groin gazing”, of erect penises under clothing.
Judi Dench (and Vin Diesel)
March 29, 2015Not morning names or death notices, but an appreciation of Dame Judi Dench; Vin Diesel comes along for the ride, so to speak.
A week ago I was startled to come across (on television) the amazingly violent science fiction movie The Chronicles of Riddick (starring Vin Diesel) and to see Judi Dench in the midst of it, as the character Aereon.
Boobies
March 29, 2015Morning names: three ballplayers
March 29, 2015On three different occasions dring the night, I woke with the name of a baseball player in my head: Al Kaline, Sal Maglie, Phil Rizzuto. (For the record, I was not a baseball card kid.)
This is not a Ding Dong
March 29, 2015Today’s Zippy:
Another riff on Magritte’s The Betrayal of Images (Ceci n’est pas une pipe), but even sillier than the last version I posted, which at least involved pipes (but thinking pipes). This time it’s (thinking) Ding Dongs. And the scene ends in taco sauce; on Ding Dongs and taco sauce in Zippyland, see here.

March 28, 2015literally literally
March 28, 2015Today’s Zits:
Instances of literal literally are surely outnumbered these days by intensive literally, but there’s still a place for it.
