Down and dirty underwear for Mothers Day

May 12, 2018

(Underwear guy, allusions to sexual practices. Imbibe with caution.)

Yesterday’s Daily Jocks ad, an “X-rated Sale” for Mothers Day weekend, with a caption of mine:

  spent husk

drained from a
day in hard harness
sprawled half-conscious
tits jutting codpiece
glistening abs
huge elegant feet
hazy hint of that
hole of male delight

An odd sale offer for Mothers Day weekend, but maybe (as I’ll suggest in another posting) it’s really for Muthuhs Day. That would work.

Differentiae

May 11, 2018

Today’s Bizarro/Wayno collaboration:

(#1) (If you’re puzzled by the odd symbols in the cartoon — Dan Piraro says there are 3 in this strip — see this Page.)

It all depends on your knowing the classic text, from the introduction to the tv show Adventures of Superman (1952-1958):

The patio boys: Cuppy, Ti-Boi, and Cairo Callen

May 11, 2018

(Distantly about plants, but mostly about the social and sexual worlds of gay men. Not for everyone.)

The bronze-leaved ti plant I got yesterday (see “Festival Burgundy”) has now been potted up to an appropriate-sized container, to join with two other notable plants, an apricot-peach cymbidium and a purple calla lily (plus a geranium — well, pelargonium — and ivy climbing all over the place):

(#1) In back, Cuppy and Ti-Boi; in front, Cairo Callen

Yeah, they’re all guys, and they’re sexy, and they have names. Hey, it’s my patio.

The poppies of summer

May 11, 2018

Early summer as a season of nature (rather than the calendar or culture) is characterized by fairly long days, warm but not hot temperatures (in the low 70s F.), mating behavior of birds and animals, and the flourishing of a characteristic set of plants. Here in northern California, we zoomed into early summer around the beginning of the month, and suddenly the bulbs of spring were succeeded by the extravagant blooms of summer — including, at Palo Alto’s Gamble Garden, a pair of poppies that hadn’t even been visible 7-10 days ago: Romneya coulteri, Matilija poppy; and Papaver orientale, Oriental poppy. They sprung up out of the ground as if by magic.

Smart Design

May 10, 2018

The title of Joost Swarte’s cover for the May 14th New Yorker:

(#1)

Some instances of smart design, in two superimposed inverted worlds. Plus the light bulb of inspiration, and the initials AZ (to which my attentional mechanisms are exquisitely attuned, so that the AZ was the first thing I focused on when I looked at the cover).

slide in(to) (y)our DM’s

May 10, 2018

(Guys in sexy underwear, yes, but no more than that. Plus a recent slang idiom.)

Daily Jocks yesterday:

   (#1) SLIDE IN OUR DM’S!

We are looking for hot new influencers to promote DailyJocks products, follow us & like our most recent post for the chance to become a DailyJocks influencer.

We will be sending out products for you to take pictures in & share with the world!

Lots of smiling — I’m big on smiles — in these amateur underwear photos, as compared to the sturdy studly pro shots.

The slang initialism DM (for direct message) I already knew, but the larger idiom slide in(to) (y)our DMs was new to me (but I’m so far from plugged into new things that I should be treated as permanently unplugged).

What have you done with your life?

May 10, 2018

An innocent-sounding request a few days back, from a Daily Beast reporter on its lgbt beat: [I’m] “working on a series of interviews with unsung (or, at least undersung) LGBT heroes. … I’m wondering if you’d be interested in being interviewed about your contributions to linguistics?”

Two claims here: I’m a person of significance in a professional field, linguistics; I’m a person of significance in the lgbt world. I am now asked to defend these claims, to demonstrate that I have done important things in both these areas of my life.

Difficult fieldwork moments in the linguistics-lgbt interface

This is where I curl into a ball of misery, in two ways at once. What have I done with my life, that people should read about me? I’m very proud of what I’ve done, in the academic world and the lgbt world, but I’m not even remotely a magisterial figure, a Great Person, in either. Sigh.

Reflections on my academic work to come. There will be lists. Long lists. I can’t promise quality, but quantity I can deliver.

Festival Burgundy

May 10, 2018

It’s a double dactyl and an eye-catching plant.

Seen at the Gamble Garden in Palo Alto yesterday, attractive foliage plants like these (which I’m now thinking of adding to the container garden on my front patio):

(#1) Cordyline x JURred ‘Festival™ Burgundy’ (also comes in Lime and Raspberry)

Another fusirrito

May 10, 2018

… as in fusion burrito. Oh, stuff it! In a burrito, in a burrito.

From my 4/28/18 posting “Another portmanrito”:

Into a world that already has the Whopperrito, the Sushirrito, and the turkerito there now bursts the Protein Bar-rito (from the Protein Bar & Kitchen). Where will this end?

Well, you can have fusion food without a portmanteau name. The Whopperrito is a Burger King fusirrito, the Sushirrito a Japanese fusirrito, the turkerito a Thanksgiving fusirrito, and the Protein Bar-rito an organic / natural fusirrito. Then there’s a desi fusirrito, the tikka masala burrito available at a number of  Bay Area restaurants, including two with outposts in Palo Alto.
