What have you done with your life?

May 10, 2018

An innocent-sounding request a few days back, from a Daily Beast reporter on its lgbt beat: [I’m] “working on a series of interviews with unsung (or, at least undersung) LGBT heroes. … I’m wondering if you’d be interested in being interviewed about your contributions to linguistics?”

Two claims here: I’m a person of significance in a professional field, linguistics; I’m a person of significance in the lgbt world. I am now asked to defend these claims, to demonstrate that I have done important things in both these areas of my life.

Difficult fieldwork moments in the linguistics-lgbt interface

This is where I curl into a ball of misery, in two ways at once. What have I done with my life, that people should read about me? I’m very proud of what I’ve done, in the academic world and the lgbt world, but I’m not even remotely a magisterial figure, a Great Person, in either. Sigh.

Reflections on my academic work to come. There will be lists. Long lists. I can’t promise quality, but quantity I can deliver.

Festival Burgundy

May 10, 2018

It’s a double dactyl and an eye-catching plant.

Seen at the Gamble Garden in Palo Alto yesterday, attractive foliage plants like these (which I’m now thinking of adding to the container garden on my front patio):

(#1) Cordyline x JURred ‘Festival™ Burgundy’ (also comes in Lime and Raspberry)

Another fusirrito

May 10, 2018

… as in fusion burrito. Oh, stuff it! In a burrito, in a burrito.

From my 4/28/18 posting “Another portmanrito”:

Into a world that already has the Whopperrito, the Sushirrito, and the turkerito there now bursts the Protein Bar-rito (from the Protein Bar & Kitchen). Where will this end?

Well, you can have fusion food without a portmanteau name. The Whopperrito is a Burger King fusirrito, the Sushirrito a Japanese fusirrito, the turkerito a Thanksgiving fusirrito, and the Protein Bar-rito an organic / natural fusirrito. Then there’s a desi fusirrito, the tikka masala burrito available at a number of  Bay Area restaurants, including two with outposts in Palo Alto.

The way I write now

May 9, 2018

Or: Arnauld le flâneur.

(Edward Gorey caught unawares.)

On 3/15/17 in “Lauren la flâneuse”:

[from Wikipedia] Flâneur … means “stroller”, “lounger”, “saunterer”, or “loafer” [the person of leisure, the idler, the urban explorer, the connoisseur of the street]. Flânerie is the act of strolling, with all of its accompanying associations.

Here flânerie refers not just to the act, but also to the reporting of the act — to a literary genre, of which I am an exponent.

Spoiling

May 8, 2018

An AMZ poetry moment.

From the New York Times Magazine, Terrance Hayes’s Poem column: “Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth” (in print 5/6, on-line 5/4), by Aimee Nezhukumatathil:

Too many needles spoil the cloth.
Too many parrots spoil the talk.
Too many chapped lips spoil the gloss.
Too many teasel burs spoil the paw.
Too many bubbles spoil the froth.
Too many doorbells spoil the knock.
Too many seeds spoil the floss.
Too many feathers spoil the claw.
Too many lightbulbs spoil the moth.
Too many holes spoil the sock.
Too many sunbeams spoil the moss.
Too many kisses spoil the jaw.
Too many wolves spoil the flock.
Too many necks spoil the block.

All edgy domesticity until the end, when ravening wolves and beheadings erupt.

haws, hawthorns, Haworth, Haworthia, Hawick

May 8, 2018

Today’s morning name was Haworthia, the genus of some attractive succulent plants. Named for a person named for a place (celebrated for its Brontë connections) named for the hawthorn bush or tree (Crataegus), which bears haws as its fruit. Incidentally, Haworth (/ˈhæwɜːrθ/), in Yorkshire, led me by spelling to Hawick (remarkably, pronounced /ˈhɔɪk/), in Scotland, though apparently it’s hawks in Hawick vs. haws in Haworth.

My skivvies are my lifestyle

May 8, 2018

(Underwear guys, but nothing shocking.)

Yesterday’s Daily Jocks ad, for the company Modus Vivendi, with its inflated ad copy (“not just a product or just a brand, it reflects a lifestyle”) and a short caption of my own devising:

(#1)

Their name, Modus Vivendi, is their philosophy. From Latin, Modus Vivendi translates to lifestyle or way of life. Their name reflects their design and manufacturing approach to everything they make; it is not just a product or just a brand, it reflects a lifestyle.

My skivvies are my lifestyle my
Crotch my world I
Reach out to
Draw you in

Four things are two binary oppositions

May 8, 2018

From Bitty Ramirez on Facebook:

It is really unusual to have a K-12 lesson that allows discussion of dice and playing cards. This may be the first time I’ve encountered it. And I am finding it really disconcerting that the writer keeps dividing suits by color instead of by major/minor.

This was at first completely baffling to me: major/minor?

It turned out to be significant that Bitty is a bridge player, and I am not. Major/minor is a thing in bridge.
