It was 42 years ago today…

From John Lawler via Facebook, a link to my 1971 Linguistic Inquiry squib on manner-of-speaking verbs (like snap in Kim snapped that it was time to leave), along with a captioned image of the Rice Krispies elves:

Sexual lexical semantics

July 9, 2013

In this posting I’m going to try to tie together several threads: a recent story about a dancer forced out of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet school for making gay porn videos on the side; the proverbial sexual activity of certain animals, in particular minks (a topic suggested by my recent posting on three fur-bearing mustelids); and the lexical semantics of the verb fuck. You can see the connections — and you can see why this posting might not be to everyone’s taste (though no images over the X line will appear in it).

How do I look?

July 8, 2013

Over on AZBlogX, I’ve continued a series on facial expressions during gay sex with a report on some scenes from the porn flick Hole 1 (God knows how many gay porn flicks have hole in their titles). It starts with Trenton Ducati playing a businessman consumed by lust for fellatio with five — count them, five — erect penises, and goes on from there.

Along the way you get one shot of Adam Killian exhibiting (once again) his proficiency at AI-AI (Acrobatic Insertive Anal Intercourse), not to be confused with the lemur the aye-aye — a side benefit of his training in dance and years of working out at the gym.

There’s a moderate amount on facial expression and gesture, little specifically on language. Also: totally not for the kiddies or the sexually modest.

A murder!

July 8, 2013

Today’s Pearls Before Swine has Pig coping badly with a term of venery:

If only Pig had chosen to report “Crows have been murdered” or “Someone’s been murdering crows”!  Instead, Pig used the noun murder with of crows as its complement, and ran afoul of an ambiguity in the result: murder is also a term of venery, a collective noun specific to a particular group (in this case, crows); some discussion here.

(Bonus: in writing about fur-bearing animals this morning, I came across the fact that a group of ferrets is a business: a business of ferrets.)

fur

July 8, 2013

In my set of Rossignol Art of Instruction cards, the card on fur:

At the bottom, three fur-bearing animals: le vison ‘mink’, la hermine ‘stoat, ermine’, and le putois ‘polecat’.

croquettes

July 8, 2013

Greg Morrow on Facebook a few days ago:

I have a memory of either the TK Stone Jr High School cafeteria [in Elizabethtown KY] or (possibly) the St. James Elementary cafeteria [ditto] having a dish which I remember as “chicken croquettes”, which were sort of, I guess, minced chicken inside stuffing ball sorts of things.

Does anyone else remember this? I remember them as being delicious, though I suppose just about anything with spices and breading and chicken and salt is going to taste great to a hungry boy.

Lots of people remembered chicken croquettes, mostly with pleasure. And there’s some linguistic (as well as culinary) interest here.

More dubious portmanteaus

July 7, 2013

For the Fourth of July (Independence Day) weekend, an advertising campaign on the TLA Adult Gay Video site:

Celebrate Foreskindependence

(intended: foreskin + independence).

Meanwhile, for some time now the 76 gasoline firm (formerly Union 76) has been running a tv ad campaign against honkaholism (honk + alcoholism, or possibly honk + the libfix –aholism), an addiction to honking.

The first turns out not to convey the intended meaning — an Independence Day sale — very well; foreskins are not centrally involved in the matter, and in any case the term could be parsed as foreskin + dependence.

The second is clever and cute, but becomes annoying on repetition.

Moose Knuckles Canada

July 7, 2013

From Chris Ambidge, this photo of a window in a camping supply store on Rideau St. in Ottawa:

(#1)

Moose Knuckles turns out to be the name of a brand of sportswear — distinctly Canadian, and also irreverent, sportswear. Canadian, hence the moose. And irreverent, hence the slang term moose knuckle (for male genitals visible through clothes).

At the X line with remarkably named pornstars

July 6, 2013

(Warning: This posting has an image of man-man sex that is right at the X line — that’s one of the topics of the posting, in fact — and some frank description of gay sex, so it might not be to everyone’s taste.)

In my e-mail yesterday, a stirring ad from Lucas Entertainment (Michael Lucas’s porn flick company, not George Lucas’s film company) for its film Lovers in Paradise, with a shot of Wagner Vittoria penetrating Tiziano Fuentes — an image that I’ll show some distance below the fold; it’s technically not X-rated (there’s no penis, testicles, or anus visible in it), though no one could mistake what’s going on there. As in my posting “X or not?” of 5/19/13, I’ll muse some on where the X line gets drawn.

First, though, a description of the scene and some information about three remarkably named pornstars (these two and Vittoria’s pornstar boyfriend Diego Lauzen).
