January 18, 2012Oran Smith, who runs Palmetto Family, a group that lobbies on behalf of Christian conservatives, quoted by Matt Bai in “The Tea Party’s Not-So-Civil War”, NYT Magazine 1/15/12, p. 37:
“I expected by this time for Rick Perry to just be kicking fanny in South Carolina,” Smith told me. “He was going to ride in and lasso South Carolina, and he wasn’t going to be stopped.”
That’s the euphemistic slang idiom kick fanny (for kick ass) — which sounds positively quaint to me in this context, though (if he was quoted correctly) Smith might have been trying to balance political macho with appropriately Christian modesty.

Evensong
January 15, 2012A JKD — J. Keene Daingerfield (Sr.) — story, following on the ones here. This one has to do with his unique adaptation of the Magnificat from the Anglican Evensong service, a hymn of praise to Mary. The section in question is based on Luke 1:53. In the KJV, the passage goes
He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

January 15, 2012That’s Frances Lucas Daingerfield (née Frances De Long Lucas, 1885-1930), Ann Daingerfield Zwicky’s grandmother on her father’s side, known as “Fan” or “Fanny”. Her gravestone:
