September 17, 2011The first of four postings, each with four collages of mine; all 16 use as background a card illustrating a tool, so that there’s some phallic content to all of them, but it’s unobstrusive in many of them. The collages in this first set have a gay sensibility that would probably qualify them as R-rated, but not X-rated; all the rest are G-rated. Venn diagramming for nerds
September 17, 2011Ben Zimmer’s recent Word Routes column on Visual Thesaurus, “Word-Lore, Nerd-Lore”, returns to the question of the origin of nerd (a topic Ben looked at a little while ago in a Boston Globe column, “Birth of the Nerd”, quoted on this blog here) and links to this entertaining Venn diagram:
Note that all four of the terms in this diagram — dweeb, nerd, geek, and dork — are of obscure etymology. This is a semantic domain where people are likely to just make words up.

September 15, 2011Surely not new this month, but it got to me (via Victor Steinbok) this month: shmeat ‘animal protein produced in vitro’, in particular in protein sheets in a lab. Sheet + meat.
Evolutionary epistemologist
September 15, 2011Another thing that came past me first thing in the morning on NPR’s Morning Edition on September 12: a KQED opinion segment by Jeremy Sherman, who was identified by the KQED announcer as “a Berkeley-based evolutionary epistemologist”. I wasn’t familiary with evolutionary epistemologist as a job title, so I checked it out.
The news for penises
September 14, 2011Episode 20 of Monty Python’s Flying Circus includes segments of television news as reported for special audiences: The News for Parrots, The News for Gibbons, and The News for Wombats (the parrot segment also has A Tale of Two Cities “specially adapted for parrots”). Here at AZBlog, penis-related material has been piling up for months, so now it’s time for The News for Penises, in five chapters. (I exclude material on gay porn and my XXX-rated collages, though these are penis-heavy, because I report on these regularly on my XBlog.)
