Sol is secretly queer

May 5, 2025

🇲🇽 It’s Cinco de Mayo today, but this posting has precious little Mexican content; don’t let that keep you from your celebrations, whatever they are.

I had intentions to cook up a homey Mexican pozole  (any occasion is a good one for pozole, in my book, and I always have a can of white hominy in the cupboard, just in case I want to assemble the materials for one), but the main fresh ingredient I had on hand was an big order of Chinese (mung) bean sprouts, so I chopped them up; added a can of lentils (another household staple), with their liquid; splashed in a dose of sriracha sauce; thickened the broth with a container of hummus (ground up chickpeas); and produced a rich, spicy, and crunchy  Chinese / Middle Eastern / Southeast Asian three-legume soup, heated in the microwave. It was fabulous. I might do it again, on purpose this time.

But this posting is a reaction to a card I got from Kathryn Burlingham in Portland OR roughly a month ago — I move sloth-like through my social responsibilities —  about (among other things) the toll of the closet for queer people. Trying to write out and then mail a physical card is, however, gravely difficult for me, while typing at my computer’s keyboard is merely somewhat painful, so this is my response to KB, which turns not so much on the closet — coming out, accepting myself, was heart-breakingly difficult for me, but I spent almost no time in the closet — but on the actual card that KB sent me, the Jahna Vashti greeting card (“vibrantly printed in [yes!] Portland OR on a sturdy, uncoated card stock”) “Brother Sun”:

Vending-machine objects of desire

April 19, 2025

[Naked men making love, so not to everyone’s taste (but so carefully done it can appear on a book cover, so no alarm bells)]

Briefly noted: a clever photo (attributed on Pinterest to male photographer Tom Bianchi) that pairs the two primary objects of gay desire with two soft drink vending machines: a Pepsi butt and a Coke basket:

(#1) And Coke Man offers a bonus of oral pleasure

Pinterest shows me this photo roughly once a day. It’s far from a typical Bianchi: I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Bianchi in which his (male) subjects are completely clothed (his Wikipedia entry just describes him as “an American writer and photographer who specializes in male nude photography”).

Today’s magnificent pun

April 13, 2025

[In the constant upheavals of my life and the world around me, I’m now just picking random stuff to post about, from the 60 or 70 items in my ever-expanding queue — whatever catches my fancy at the moment. Don’t try to make sense of it as a whole.]

Jim Horwitz’s Watson cartoon for 4/9 (it came to me on Facebook, which has its own peculiar ways of delivering postings, today, 4/13):

Ingeniously outrageous: Batman and Robin turned into food containers

Flagging DEI

March 7, 2025

(These are rough times, and I’m going to use some very rough language; I think the world would be a better place if we all just got comfortable with this language — and what it conveys — but I understand that people come to what I write with their own histories, attitudes, and feelings, and some might be offended by my words; this posting is not suitable for them)

I live in a world where my government has declared, in effect, that anyone other than a straight white cis-gender Christian male (a swhiccm, for short) in a position of significance holds that position only because of efforts to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion; we non-swhiccms are inferior by nature, members of various untouchable castes (and therefore we should all be dismissed from these positions). That fratbro hounddog Bret Kavanaugh serves as a SCOTUS justice because of his extraordinary legal acumen, yeah right, while the distinguished jurist Ketanji Brown Jackson sits on the SCOTUS bench only because KBJ is a black women.

Getting personal … I have an adjunct professor position at Stanford, the story goes, only because I am a DEI poster boy, and I’m a DEI poster boy because I’m a pussy-boy gay / queer / faggot who’s highly visible, one who somehow got ahead in linguistics and mouths off on the net, willing to talk about almost anything. (On pussy-boyhood: I really do have a t-shirt that says FUCK ME LIKE THE WHORE I AM — I don’t wear it in public only because I believe you shouldn’t make offers you’re not in a position to deliver on, and though I’m ready at any moment to explain the physical and emotional satisfactions I used to derive from getting fucked, I’m a very old, sick, and disabled fat guy, and I haven’t been, um, up to the act for decades, though it lives on vividly, every day, in my sexual imagination. Daily happy balls!)

Now. If I’m going to be tarred with the DEI label, I’m going to wear it like a badge of honor. I’m going to flag DEI the way the hanky code advertised preferences in gay sex acts: I’m hot to DEI your fuckin’ socks off, buddy!

So, of course, I shopped for a t-shirt.

Warnings

March 3, 2025

Passed on by John McIntyre on Facebook yesterday, this Jim Benton cartoon:

(#1) It’s all the fault of the Cassandras; they should have made us believe them, they shouldn’t have let us not believe them

(There’s a Page on this blog about my postings on Jim Benton and his cartoons.)

A coat of arms

February 19, 2025

Unus pro omnibus
Omnes pro uno

This display came by me on my Facebook feed this morning; as a grandson of Switzerland I found it offensive (and, by the way, inaccurate):

(#1) From the Holy Roman Empire Association, the coats of arms of “European Kingdoms, Duchies and Principalities in 1519”

Switzerland is a confederation, with no ruler — not king nor duke nor prince — and has been (with occasional hiccups) since its founding in 1291. Like the Friends / Quakers, it is (in principle) radically egalitarian, as am I personally (though I concede that every person, and every human institution, is imperfect, flawed; but that’s a core principle of radical egalitarianism).

Another gay Saint Sebastian

February 4, 2025

(saintly male bodies seen through worldly eyes and treated in sometimes very plain talk, so not to everyone’s taste)

From Susan Benson Hamel yesterday:

Thought of you yesterday when I was in the Auckland art gallery and came across this delightfully coy St Sebastian by Guido Reni:

(#1) There are an astonishing number of St. Sebastians out there; this Reni really is wonderful (I said to SBH), in its dreamy gaze welcoming death, and all done with a single mortal arrow (plus, Reni dwells lovingly on the saint’s body, giving what many have seen as a homoerotic cast to the painting; and his private parts are just barely concealed, as in a cock tease)

Giggly banana couches and the buffoonish Oscar Mayer Wienermobile

January 28, 2025

The news for (symbolic) penises, following up on my previous posting about the years of the dragon and the snake in the Chinese zodiac (which ends with a promise of giggly banana couches and the buffoonish Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, a promise hereby fulfilled). It begins with a 1/18/25 posting on the Art Facebook page, with no source cited: a posting of a banana couch, passed on by a friend, who suggested that it would make suitable furniture for the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile:

(#1) This sofa is one of a set of AI banana couches from Designideahub, which seems to provide AI-generated design ideas (“your one-stop place for art, creativity, AI, design and product inspiration”)

Dragon welcomes snake

January 28, 2025

🐍 🐍 🐍 three snakes to welcome the new year in the lunar calendar and the year of the snake in the Chinese zodiac; today is the last day of a dragon year (I am a dragon), and tomorrow begins a snake year

As usual, there are many graphics for the new year, showing a variety of approaches to the theme, most of them in Chinese red (a color associated with the Chinese nation, the sun, and good luck; it has nothing to do with communism, where the symbolic value of red comes from the Red army (the victors) versus the White army in the Russian civil war of 1917-23). One graphic I like:

The beefcakemeister

January 21, 2025

(all about an artist who celebrates male genitals and men sharing theirs with one another for fun and pleasure, whose work I will be discussing in street language, so this posting is totally not for kids or the sexually modest — though to satisfy WordPress’s strictures, there are, alas, no genitals displayed for open view)

The artist is the beefcakemeister Kent Neffendorf, who came to me this morning in this painting on Pinterest:
