I PAINT BOYS

August 22, 2024

(Talk about male bodies and sex between men in plain language, so, alas, not suitable for kids or the sexually modest)

The artistic manifesto of Polish queer artist Wojciech Woś (now working in Berlin), who came to my attention through this sweet and sexy (but, technically, entirely decorous) painting that came up on Pinterest this morning:

(#1) White Sock Club: one in a series with two boys, in white socks, on a blue sofa — a place where much can happen, but isn’t shown, only implied

WW is earnest and passionate about his art — and radically open in talking in plain language about what he’s doing in his art and what it means to him personally. Here’s his statement from his website (I’m giving you his text verbatim; he could use an English-speaking copyeditor to polish this text, but it’s so charming that I’d hate to mess with his voice).

What’s in YOUR holster?

August 13, 2024

By some odd accident, today has turned out to be Holster Day — it’s also, unrelatedly, the (96th) birthday of the late Bill Bright, eminent linguist and great friend — as the first panel in a Bizarro cartoon from my 8/11 posting “Toto, Tonto, let’s call the whole thing off” washed up against Lee Falk’s depiction of his comic-strip hero the Phantom, which came by me on Facebook. What they share is well-filled holsters (flaunting their phallic attractions).

(#1) The Bizarro panel. Phallos the skeleton gunslinger of the Old West, illustrating a variant of the Concealed Carry joke: Is that a banana in your holster, or are you just happy to see me?

(#2) Falk’s Phantom. The double-holstered hero, brandishing one of his two handguns

Toto, Tonto, let’s call the whole thing off

August 11, 2024

Today’s Dan Piraro Bizarro, in three panels: an odd title panel that seems to be mostly about phallicity in the mythic Old West, and two Toto / Tonto confusion panels: the Lone Ranger and Toto (with a glancing allusion to Little Orphan Annie); and Dorothy and Tonto — to which I’ve added a Gershwin song in my title for this posting — to make a rich stew of American pop culture, covering the comics, jokes, movies, radio, tv, and popular music:

(#1) It’s a Sunday panel, so it’s by DP, not Wayno, and it’s a horizontal strip rather than a vertical one-panel gag (if you’re puzzled by the odd symbols in the cartoon — Dan Piraro says there are 7 in this strip — see this Page)

I’ll look at things panel by panel, then comment on my title for this posting — but first I’ll point out that

— the second panel, set in the desert of the mythic Old West, is from the Lone Ranger world, but with the dog Toto (intruding from the Wizard of Oz world) in place of the faithful Indian companion Tonto (Toto in effect punning on Tonto)

— while the third panel, with Dorothy confronting the Wicked Witch of the West (accompanied by one of her evil flying monkeys) on the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City of Oz, is from the Wizard of Oz world, but with Tonto (intruding from the Lone Ranger world) in place of Toto (Tonto in effect punning on Toto)

Here I’m carrying over my analysis, in yesterday’s posting “Harry’s scaffolding”, of one type of absurdist cartoon as involving an anchor world and an intrusive world; the second panel of #1 stands on its own as one such absurdist cartoon, and the third is another. The special delight of these panels is that the two absurdist cartoons are converses, conceptual mirror images of one another.

A taste for snails

July 25, 2024

Nelson Minar writing on Facebook on 7/19 alludes to the controversial oysters vs. snails bath scene in the 1960 movie Spartacus:

Facebook has now figured out that I prefer snails to oysters so it is serving me ads featuring improbable men’s butts instead of improbable women’s butts. It hasn’t figured me out on the daddy / twink axis yet though.

I was derailed for a moment by a vision of a rock band called Improbable Butts. And, entertained by NM’s report that he’s a snail guy, derailed for a longer period by this vision of a notably phallic rainbow snail:

(#1) From the Craiyon site, an AI image generated from the prompt “A whimsical rainbow-colored snail with a trail of sparkling slime”

But now to Spartacus, after which I can return to snails as food and the verb eat.

The coming duodecfest

July 15, 2024

Not pocalypse, but fest / A day on which I’m blest: September 6th is the coming AMZ duodecfest, the celebration of my 84th birthday, 84 being the 7th — and therefore lucky — duodecade (a duodecade is a dozen years, the duodecimal counterpart of the decade in the decimal system).  I’m posting now about my associations with 84, to get that stuff out of my head, so that 8 weeks from now I can just lie back and let the occasion wash over me.

So: first thing, my lucky duodecade. A notion that bubbled up from my mathematical past, along with things like triangular numbers, the Fibonacci sequence, repeating decimals, the infinity of primes, transfinite numbers, and all that good stuff.

Then, second thing, the 84 Lumber Company and the Pennsylvania town of Eighty Four, which leads me to the phallicity of lumber, logs, and planks; if there’s a phallus or phallic act somewhere in a topic, I’ll find it. (I continue to hope that someone has used 84 like 69, to name a sexual act — he 84ed like a crazed mink.)

Finally, Helene Hanff’s delightful 1970 book 84, Charing Cross Road, which takes me to life histories (in this case, of two people) and to rambles through books, both old friends and fresh discoveries (which is what those two people engage in, in transatlantic correspondence). Two more themes from my writing.

The Princeton rub tool

June 14, 2024

(Even choosing my words carefully, a fair amount of this posting is going to be inappropriate for kids and the sexually modest; you’ll see why in a couple of seconds)

Two themes for today: tools, and their masculinity; and male-male frottage, especially one variant of the Princeton rub. Somewhat astoundingly, these two themes intersect in what I think of as the Princeton rub tool: a dual masturbation sleeve, a device to facilitate two guys getting off together face to face.

Perrito Nebraska!

June 8, 2024

Briefly noted. Michael Covarrubias — an American, from Battle Creek MI, who lives and works in Turkey, and is now on holiday in Madrid — has been reporting on Facebook on the texture of the life around him in Madrid, taking photos with a keen eye for little bits of beauty, oddity, and humor. Today’s MC observations included a surprise: state-fair concession food from the farmlands of middle America. That edible and portable triumph of Americana, the corndog / corn dog: a hot dog coated with cornmeal batter and deep fried, on a stick. The Perrito Nebraska ‘little Nebraska dog’, an exotic specialty of the little restaurant La Españolita (I’m sorry; we’re all awash in diminutives).

As a bonus, it comes with some truly grotesque ad design that undercuts the natural goofy-phallic attractions of the corndog as art object.

Vitruvianus stands in Belgrave Square

June 6, 2024

The title is a play on the song title “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” (that’s Berkeley pronounced like Barclay, not like Burkley), and after an introduction to my colleague Asya Pereltsvaig this posting goes with her on a recent visit to Belgrave Square — Berkeley Square (in Mayfair) and Belgrave Square (in, yes, Belgravia) being two delightful green spaces in the toniest parts of central London — and I will celebrate the Vitruvian Man statue Homage to Leonardo in Belgrave Square. But in the end, today’s essay is about penises — the one on Vitruvian Man, the one on Michelangelo’s David, and the one on Astrid Zydower’s Orpheus — and their acceptability in a variety of cultural contexts.

So, while I have labored to keep the crude references to a minimum, there’s no denying that this posting will end up being, um, phallically rich — which some of my readers will find unsavory and unwelcome; this is a warning about what’s to come.

Chavo con churro

May 17, 2024

… take 2. Previously on this blog (in my 5/11 posting “The gay handshake”), a quote from GoNakedMagazine and Travels, on the Medium site, “The Gay Handshake: 5 Reasons Why Blowjobs [Are] Good for Your Health” … with this wonderful photo  of a handsome young Latino character enjoying an especially long and thick churro filled with vanilla cream:

(#1) Chavo con churro (Mexican nickname Chavo ‘kid’), as I’ve come to think of him, in a photo I’ve been unable to find the source of

And then in the last few days I’ve been blitzed with tv commercials for Subway footlong snacks to accompany their footlong subs. From the Subway newsroom:

Subway® Reveals Sidekicks, an Irresistible Collection of Footlong Cookies, Churros and Pretzels

Three beloved snacks — Subway’s chocolate chip cookies, Cinnabon® churros and Auntie Anne’s® pretzels — take on a new, iconic footlong form, exclusively at Subway restaurants starting January 22.
