Notable Zwickys

I had somehow missed this Wikipedia page until I stumbled on it this morning:

Zwicky is a surname. Notable people with the surname include:

  Arnold Zwicky (born 1940), American linguist

  Fay Zwicky (1933–2017), Australian poet and academic

  Fritz Zwicky [1898-1974], astrophysicist who proposed dark matter

  Jan Zwicky (born 1955), Canadian poet

  Rolf Zwicky (born 1957), Swiss sailor

  Tommy Zwicky, Danish journalist and television presenter

You will see that I come first — because the list (presumably of people named Zwicky who have Wikipedia pages) is alphabetical by first name).

There’s a Page on this blog where I keep track of my Zwicky postings; the Page lists a huge assortment of people, most of them connected in some way to Canton Glarus in (northeastern) Switzerland (where my Zwicky grandparents were born and raised). The Glarus connection isn’t clear from Wikipedia’s brief entries for Rolf and Tommy, who aren’t (yet) on my Page, but I assume that it’s there.

(Searching on anyone named Zwicky is going to get you some stuff about the astrophysicist Fritz, who’s a star of the first magnitude and so tends to eclipse all the rest of us.)

But now a few words about Tommy, who’s billed as an award-winning journalist, communications specialist, and editor-in-chief, especially on tv. Also as a children’s rights advocate (he has a program for kids). Swiss-Danish (as I am Swiss-American) and photogenic (as I am not); two photos:

(#1) (p.r. shot:) serious but approachable, well-dressed but informal (that’s his style)

(#2) engaged and pleasant, good with kids

(Give him an Alpine nose and he’d look a lot more Swiss. Give him blue eyes and he’d look a lot more Danish.)
