The do(ugh)nut news for Halloween

Yesterday morning, in the “Cool Secret Places” segment of KFJC’s Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack Show, we visited Psycho Donuts (in Campbell and San Jose), which has several offerings suitable for Halloween.

The NBMSS is a weekly feature on KFJC (broadcasting from Foothill College, programs available by streaming on-line), Saturday 9-12, with theme songs from tv shows, soundtracks from movies, etc., hosted by the enthusiastic (and heavy Isis-using) Robert Emmett. In the “Cool Secret Places” segment, Emmett takes listeners to some South Bay place that’s unusual, entertaining, or impressive.

As for Psycho Donuts (2006 S. Winchester Blvd, Campbell, CA 95008; 288 S. 2nd Street, San Jose, CA 95113), here’s the (somewhat overwrought) description on their website:

Psycho Donuts is the world’s first and only asylum for wayward donuts. Psycho Donuts has “donutized” [note the derivation in -ize] everything from hamburgers, French fries, pizzas, tacos, and even ice cream sandwiches. You’ll find crazy-fresh, original donuts topped with everything from Oreo® cookies and Captain Crunch, to Rice Crispie Treats and Nutella®. Check out our crazy gourmet donuts like The Dead Elvis, filled with custard and topped with bananas, peanut butter & jelly, and bacon; and The Psycho Passionata, filled with organic white chocolate and passion fruit. Our Psycho Ballz are fun to eat and come in laugh-inducing varieties like Chocolate Salty Ballz, Piggy Ballz, Nutty Ballz, and even Wookie Ballz.

A trip to Psycho Donuts is a sensory experience, designed to bring out the crazy in all of us. Beautiful nurses [well, young women in nurse uniforms] are on hand to provide bubblewrap therapy [bursting the bubbles in bubblewrap] to minimize donut decision-making stress. Psycho Donuts doubles as a quirky, offbeat art gallery, offering inexpensive original artwork from local artists. Put on a costume and take a picture in The Psycho Padded Cell; and donut miss our collection of eclectic merchandise.

The offerings tend to have elaborately playful names: Nutella the Hun, Doh-nilla, Cereal Killer, Glazed and Confused, Desserted Island, Cinnamon Troll. Then for Halloween we have The Jasonut (with an allusion to Jason and the Argonauts and an explicit reference to Jason, the hockey-masked killer in the Friday the Thirteenth movies:

Jason is coming for you! Buy him for the chocolate raised dough. Fear him for the bloody raspberry filling and powdered sugar hockey mask!

And, in collaboration with another South Bay attraction:

Psycho Donuts is a proud sponsor of Fright Nights at Winchester Mystery House! Sarah’s Lucky 13 honors Sarah Winchester’s obsession with Number 13! Filled with raspberry jelly, Lucky 13 is iced in chocolate, with a vanilla spider web drizzle, and a blood-red 13.

Here’s the Psycho Donut Winchester skull donut:

We’ve seen extravagantly inventive donuts (or doughnuts; my spelling varies) before, from the Glory Hole Doughnut shop in Toronto, here.

Two other do(ugh)nut postings: on “Donuts and Chinese Food” (in San Francisco and elsewhere), here; and on “Fasnacht Day”, here.

  1. Halloween stud « Arnold Zwicky's Blog Says:

[…] On the 28th, we had “The do(ugh)nut news for Halloween”, with suitably scary items from Psycho Donuts. And on the 29th, “Halloween Giants”, with orange and black sexy underwear (for Halloween from Undergear, for the San Francisco Giants from Papi, though either would serve either purpose). […]
