News for animated penises

Now in theaters and being advertised on tv: the animated movie Sausage Party, pretty much an extended (but good-hearted) dick joke. Innuendo in the posters (fill alluding to insertion, rise alluding to erection):

(#1)

(#2)

Profanity and sexual allusions abound in the movie — but there are, of course, no actual penises: the main characters are (simulacra of) penises but don’t themselves have penises.

Note the female character in #1. Yes, a hot dog bun (to put a penis, er, hot dog, in).

From Wikipedia:

Sausage Party is a 2016 American adult computer-animated comedy film directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon and written by Kyle Hunter, Ariel Shaffir, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. It stars the voices of Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton, and Salma Hayek. It is the first CGI-animated film to be rated R by the MPAA [for profanity and all those sexual allusions].

A spoof of Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks films, the film follows a sausage who tries to discover the truth about his existence and goes on a journey with his friends [a variety of foodstuffs] to escape their fate [to be eaten].

It’s described as an “adult comedy”, meaning it has “adult language” (profanity) and “mature content” (sexual situations) – but in fact it’s pitched perfectly to 13- or 14-year-old boys, so it ought to be called a (somewhat raunchy) “teen comedy”.  Which means it’s aimed at young men who like to think of themselves as 13- or 14-year-old boys. Not that there’s anything wrong with that; the mansion of cinema has many rooms, including that rec room in the basement.

The movie certainly doesn’t show grown-up characters behaving like grown-ups. And because of the R rating (someone under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian), actual 13- or 14-year-old boys can’t experience the movie the way they’d prefer (in packs of guys their age).

Meanwhile, hot dogs and other sorts of sausages are such common phallic symbols that I’ve created a Page on this blog just to list postings about such uses.

Now, on the expression sausage party. From an 8/22/10 posting:

sausage party (aka salami party and who knows how many other variants), a slang expression denoting a gathering where guys outnumber girls; or denoting a gathering that is all guys, that is, a sausage fest or dude party. (The literal sense of sausage party ‘party for the cooking and eating of sausages’ is of course also available. If you’re a sausage, you really need to find out which kind of party you’re being invited to.)

… The sausage of sausage party starts out as a slang metaphor for a penis and then is extended metonymically to the penis-bearer, that is, a boy or man.

As an alternative to sausage party there’s also bro party and in fact cock party, coined as the counterpart to hen party (‘a social gathering of women’ (NOAD2)). Plus another use of cock party, crucially involving penises and some male-male sex.
