On gender: The caption identifies the owl as male. Then, in case you don’t automatically assume heteronormativity, the penguin is marked as female by long eyelashes. (In the real world, a surprising number of men have beautiful long eyelashes, without any assist — a fact that annoyed Ann Daingerfield Zwicky enormously.)
