Second Sunday

My second Sunday at Avant, beginning to refine old routines and create new ones. Did not celebrate with gay porn, but instead with an old favorite movie, the frivolous Astaire-Rogers delight The Gay Divorcee (from 1934). Your wife is safe with Tonetti / He prefer spaghetti. No Palo Alto Sacred Harp singing this Sunday, so I sang for two hours on my own, to Irish YouTube videos, eventually reaching peak loudness and passion. My tongue broke out in unknown strains / And sung surprising grace.

Accumulated the beginnings of way too many postings to come. And did the Sunday thing of restarting the computer and doing a save of its contents.

Ordered more household items, got some delivered, mostly things with instructions that are incomplete or completely incomprehensible, at least to me. On the first, I have a new atomic clock for the bathroom, the 40-year-old veteran being on its last legs; the new one has homed in on the right 12-hour Pacific Daylight Time, but has provided no way — that I can fathom — to set the date and day of the week. On the second,  I have the mounting tape but completely fail to understand how to adhesive-mount my collages (merely printed on stiff paper, not framed or heavy) on my walls. And on and on.

This will all get worse tomorrow, when even more stuff gets delivered. So I can wander fretfully from one puzzle to another.

On the atomic clock front, I’m delighted to report that if you wait long enough, like overnight, the clock eventually synchs up to the right date and day of the week on its own. I am sorry to have doubted it.

I have a fairly old indoor/outdoor digital thermometer (which can also show the daily maxima and minima). I find it rather amazing that this fairly tiny object is able to sync with the national time service from (I believe) WWVB in Boulder. I worry every time I have to replace the batteries that it won’t resync, but it always has within a day or so. My problem is that it comes up in Pacific Daylight time which at this time of year is identical to Mountain Standard and is not necessarily noticeable right away, so each time I change the batteries I have to figure out (again) how to change the time zone and how to turn off daylight time. I’m pleased that it works, but the company (AccuRite) apparently no longer sells thermometers with this capability, so I have to keep this one working as long as I can.

Interesting; I’ve had a series of such thermometers in Gloucester, MA, and not one has ever been able to sync with the national time service, although they have claimed to be able to see it. (My current one doesn’t have a time display, which is fine with me; we don’t lack for clocks.)
