Walking through a door

I am reduced to reporting on the minutiae of daily life; everything else is overwhelming. (Half an hour this morning finding out where something I was absolutely sure had been moved had been stashed in my new place. At least I did actually find it. View this as a cautionary tale. I’m getting very little done, very slowly, and not very well, but it’s the best I can do, so I plug away.)

It’s taken me a whole week to figure out how to walk through doors here. Well, the extremely heavy (because astoundingly sound-proofed) front door to my place — negotiated from a walker, so that mere strength is not sufficient for the task.

The answer is: you essentially back in.  Unlock the door, push it open a bit, swivel your body around (continuing your hold on the walker) so you can catch the door on your hip and then push it all the way open with your butt. Back into the room,  then swivel back, free and clear, so the door will slide shut behind you. All of this can be fashioned into a smooth dance routine that works just fine.

No doubt it looks ridiculous. But then there have never been any spectators, so what the hell do I care how it looks.

I’m not sure how much time I spent in the first year or two after our big move looking for things – usually books – whose storage place was unknown. One particularly frustrating instance was my Penguin edition of four plays by George Bernard Shaw (which goes back to my junior high school days), in which I wanted to find the exact wording of a line from Caesar and Cleopatra; but it appears not to have made the move, which I find baffling, as I can’t imagine having consciously decided not to keep it.

At least you were able to find whatever it is you were seeking.

I was searching for the huge container of Shout spot remover — the backup supply to refill the spray bottle I actually use on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, the books, oh lord the books.
