Acting normal

Today’s Zippy asks the question: would it be better if Zippy acted in a normal fashion? Would that make Zerbina happier?

(#1) Faced with a normal-brain alternative to Zippy’s surreal non sequiturs about logic, word salad, and accountants, Zerbina decides to sing along with Rogers and Hart: don’t change a hair for me

A few words about Rogers and Hart’s song, and a few words about me and my postings, which, like my linguistics articles, are regularly labeled as eccentric and idiosyncratic, usually not in a nice way.

“My Funny Valentine”. From Wikipedia:

“My Funny Valentine” is a show tune from the 1937 Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart coming of age musical Babes in Arms in which it was introduced by teenaged star Mitzi Green. The song became a popular jazz standard, appearing on over 1300 albums performed by over 600 artists. One of them was Chet Baker, for whom it became his signature song.

From the lyrics:

(#2) The lyrics are especially poignant coming from Larry Hart, who is said to have believed he was too ugly to attract the (male) lovers he yearned for

My posting style.  I don’t just repost stuff, but add analysis, personal commentary, photos of guys in jockstraps or less, background material, stories about friends, free associations to other topics, digressions about linguistics, jokes, anecdotes from my life, death notices, bits of free verse of my own composition, silliness, as much music and food as I can get in (see #2 above), and more.

To paraphrase Zippy:

I thought that what you wanted was just eccentric free associations about linguistics, gay sex, and Bizarro cartoons!

I used to get, fairly often, e-mail from people who wrote, in a truculent tone, things like:

I don’t understand why you post about the things you do

Conveying, quite clearly, that they think the stuff I post about is worthless shit and I should just stop doing it. But I don’t answer them and I haven’t changed my ways. I won’t, in fact, change a hair for them.

One Response to “Acting normal”

  1. John Baker Says:

Those who are afraid to say or do anything different or novel will never accomplish anything interesting or important. You are right to ignore their vapid criticisms.
