Higashi Day cartoon 4: tending the stone

(Yes, “Higashi Day cartoon 3: sentence-initial anymore” is still on its way; it’s just turned out to be gigantic.)

From various Facebook sources, a JAK (Jason Adam Katzenstein) cartoon on his Twitter site on 1/10/18, now, ouch, virally popular as most of the world is obliged to work from home:

(#1) Appreciate his facial expression

As it turns out, Sisyphus is a well-mined cartoon meme. JAK himself has done at least two others:

(#2) From the 4/30/18 New Yorker

Is that all there is, is that all there is?
If that’s all there is my friends, then let’s keep dancing
Let’s break out the booze and have a ball
If that’s all there is

From Wikipedia:

“Is That All There Is?”, a song written by American songwriting team Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller during the 1960s, became a hit for American singer Peggy Lee and an award winner from her album of the same title in November 1969. The song was originally performed by Georgia Brown in May 1967 for a television special.

(#3) From the 2/18/20 New Yorker

And there are tons of others. Just from previous postings on this blog:

on 5/10/14 in “Party of five”, #3 is a Rhymes With Orange Sissypuss cartoon

on 5/27/15 in “Narcissyphus”, an Art Spiegelman cartoon in the 6/1/15 New Yorker

on 4/6/19 in “The trail mixer”, #7 is a Seth Fleishman New Yorker cartoon with a disco dancer as Sisyphus

It just so happens that I’m in the middle of reading the January 13th New Yorker, in which the “Shouts and Murmurs” column consists of a sports reporter interviewing Sisyphus (with the interview being interrupted periodically by yet another unsuccessful attempt), in which Sisyphus spouts just about all of the usual sports-star clichés, especially those used by a mostly-unsuccessful athlete.

Somehow I missed this. But then two months ago I didn’t realize that Sisyphus and his rock would soon loom large in my life. In any case: “Pre-Game Interview” by Jay Martel. Notable excerpt:

REPORTER: Do you ever wonder what you did to be stuck at this level? Because I do.
SISYPHUS: It’s just character-building adversity that, in the end, is gonna make me stronger.
