Cave painting

On Facebook, Tony Woodbury has passed on this favorite cartoon of his, from the old Saturday Review (of Literature):

Cave painting is usually thought of as a precursor to a writing system: the telling of a story through a succession of images evoking events. The cartoonist Dawes (about whom I haven’t been able to find out anything) has chosen instead to treat the succession of images as the encoding of a specific text — a text in ornate poetic style, in fact.
