Everything’s coming up rainbow

Yesterday it was the logos of Major League Baseball teams. Today it’s London Transport, in a story today from the UK’s PinkNews, featuring this photo:

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan declares ‘love is love’ as tube stations get a rainbow makeover

(Hat tip to Roger Phillips.)

From the story:

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has said that Londoners are “free to love whoever you want to love”, as some of the most iconic London Underground stations get a rainbow makeover for Pride.

To mark the Pride in London festival today, which launches this week ahead of the Pride parade on July 8, Transport for London is giving parts of the city’s transport network a new rainbow design.

… “As commuters make their way across the capital, they’ll be greeted by rainbow colours taking pride of place at Underground stations, bus stops and Santander Cycles around Soho, sending a strong message of support to London’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.”

As part of the Transport for London campaign, rainbow roundels have been installed at Tottenham Court Road, Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus Tube stations, with a #loveislove slogan above the Oxford Street entrance of Tottenham Court Road station.

Only in certain neighborhoods. And possibly only for Pride season — I couldn’t tell from the story. So an advance, but maybe only a small one, and it can always be taken back.

The White House was illuminated in Pride colors the night the Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage was handed down. It was only one night, but it was emotionally stirring. However, it’s unimaginable that something similar would happen under the current U.S. administration, or at 10 Downing Street. There will be gestures from LGBT-friendly administrations in a few cities, and those will be gratifying — but they can always be retracted when administrations change.
