There’s an echo here (in the pray / prey pun) of a famous political cartoon by Thomas Nast, “A Group of Vultures Waiting for the Storm to ‘Blow Over’—‘Let Us Prey”, in Harper’s Weekly of 9/23/1871, developing an idea of Horace Greeley’s in attacks on Boss Tweed and the Tweed Ring:
