Commenting on my postings on “morning names” (collected here), which are names that come to me unbidden upon awakening, Mike McKinley makes the connection to something else that might come to a man unbidden upon awakening, namely morning wood, which led him to Ed Wood — surely the perfect morning name.
Morning wood ‘erection upon awakening’came up on this blog on 1/4/11, where readers were shunted to my X blog because of the accompanying image: here. On the linguistic details there:
Wood in morning wood is a mass noun, as in get/pop (some) morning wood ‘get an erection upon awakening’ and the like. (There’s even wax the morning wood ‘masturbate upon awakening’.) Most slang terms for ‘erect penis’ are count nouns, as is the model erection: hard(-)on, woody, boner, chubby, and so on, so it’s have a hardon/woody/boner/chubby etc. ‘have an erect penis’ and get/pop a hardon/woody/boner/chubby etc. ‘become erect’. (Note the variety of images in these count nouns, the -y and -er in the playful derivatives woody and boner, and the nouning of the adjective chubby.)
Then there’s Ed Wood. From Wikipedia:
Edward Davis “Ed” Wood Jr. (October 10, 1924 — December 10, 1978) was an American screenwriter, director, producer, actor, author and film editor.
In the 1950s, Wood made a number of low-budget science fiction, horror and cowboy genre films, intercutting stock footage. In the 1960s and 1970s, he made sexploitation movies and wrote over 80 pulp crime, horror and sex novels. In 1980, he was posthumously awarded a Golden Turkey Award as Worst Director of All Time, renewing public interest in his work. Wood’s career and camp approach has earned him and his films a cult following.
Following the publication of Rudolph Grey’s 1992 oral biography Nightmare of Ecstasy: The Life and Art of Edward D. Wood, Jr., Wood’s life and work have undergone a public rehabilitation of sorts, leading up to director Tim Burton’s biopic of Wood’s life, Ed Wood (1994), a critically acclaimed film starring Johnny Depp as Wood
(Later the article takes up Wood’s passion for and about crossdressing.) Depp as Wood in drag:
