Walking in the rain

Today’s Zits, with Sarah and Jeremy coming in out of the rain:

Though the relevant scene in Singin’ in the Rain has a substantial downpour, walking in the rain tends to conjure up very light, even misty, warm rain. But my interest here is in Jeremy’s comment, “Songwriters are often liars.”

What struck me was this wording choice over other, more informal, choices, like “Songwriters lie a lot”. Jeremy’s choice avoided this vernacular tone, in favor of something that’s simple but even poetic in tone. (I was reminded of Ned Sublette’s wry 1981 song “Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly Fond of Each Other”, covered by Willie Nelson in 2006 and by others.) You might consider setting the line to music.
