In researching a question for the radio show, I was interested to see that both the idea of a swearing parrot and the phrase “Polly want a cracker?” go back to at least as early as 1848. This satirical advertisement from a fake newspaper in an issue of The Knickerbocker of 1849 is a particularly good early example.
