Fixing things

A Pearls Before Swine strip that’s been sitting in my queue since, omigod, 2/14/16:

All about fixing things.

Two senses of the verb fix from NOAD2:

3 mend; repair: you should fix that shelf.

informal influence the outcome of (something, especially a race, contest, or election) by illegal or underhanded means: the foundation denies fixing races.

Goat wants the political system to be repaired (sense 3), while Rat (ever the cynic) maintains that it’s illegally influenced (sense 6), and Pig (often clueless) seems not to understand the difference.

The very large collection of senses of fix radiates from the etymological original, having to do with fastening, or firmly locating, something in a place.

One Response to “Fixing things”

  1. Robert Coren Says:

Some of them get pretty far from that initial idea, e.g. what it means to “fix” a cat.

Which come to think of it, might be just what our political system needs.
