Slow snails are such a recurrent theme in cartoons that they can be seen to constitute a cartoon meme.
Some cartoonists specialize in snails: the New Yorker cartoonist Charles Barsotti, for example, doted on dogs but had a sideline in snails, as in #6 in a 12/11/15 posting on this blog.
Slow snails can be combined with slow turtles, snails being even slower than turtles, as in this cartoon that came to me on Facebook:
