Cheese Barrel Polka

Today’s Zippy, with one of his celebrated song burlesques:

Though the parody words are sometimes quite distant from the original, the accordion, the title “Cheese Barrel Polka”, and the meter and rhyme scheme of the song should work together to get you almost immediately to “Beer Barrel Polka”, with the verse

Roll out the barrel, we’ll have a barrel of fun
Roll out the barrel, we’ve got the blues on the run
Zing boom tararrel, ring out a song of good cheer
Now’s the time to roll the barrel, for the gang’s all here

Roll out the barrel > Pole vault the bagel, with each accented word replaced by a phonologically close substitute, eventually dissolves into relative chaos in line 3, where the first half of the line is wrenched around to get Cain and Abel into the thing, and the second half is altered grossly to get cheese into things (for the title Cheese Barrel Polka).

As for the original song, see my 10/31/15 posting “Rosamunde”, from which:

The German song “Rosamunde”. Another occurrence of the woman’s name, in a song we know in English as “The Beer Barrel Polka”. It has a complex history.

A history that I then sketch. There are performances there in German and English.
