(Some frank discussion of man-man sex here, but in elevated rather than plain language. And only one photo, suggestive but far from X-rated.)
On AZBlogX, a piece on another of male photograher Jonathan Black’s models: porn actor Chris Champion:
(X-rated Black photos of Champion, and shots of Champion in hardcore porn action, are on AZBlogX.)
Champion is a gorgeous man. But writeups of his porn work note that his performances were often lackluster, probably because he is straight — a gay-for-pay (G4P) actor — and not fully engaged in his work. So: back to the topic of G4P.
Background, from this posting of 1/15/11, which asks the question, “What do you call a man who identifies himself as straight but nevertheless has sex with other men?” and gives three answers, which I examined in the posting: a MSM (man who has sex with men), trade, and G4P. (I still have no clue as to the history of the last term.)
“Gay for pay” of 1/14/11 looks at G4P actor Chris Rockway, who has said, “While I’m not attracted to the guys I’ve been with, a lot of us have become friends and we approach it like some guys would see a game of touch football, wrestling or horsing around. Guys being guys — just in a different way.” In that posting I noted:
Ordinarily, being gay for pay is a turn-off for me, especially since a number of these actors project contempt for their partners, sometimes to the point of noticeable homophobia. But Rockway (like many of the straight Bel Ami boys) strikes me as charming and good-natured, so he turns me on.
But “frankly gay” porn actors don’t necessarily buy what G4Ps say. From a posting of 3/20/11 on Dean Phoenix, who
has been out of the closet since he was a teenager. He’s also an enthusiastic and affectionate sex partner in his films; he takes evident pleasure in the sexual acts. It’s understandable that he would have little sympathy with the way men like Rockway configure their sexuality. It’s hard for him to imagine that anyone who performs sexually as well as Rockway does truly lacks desire for his partners.
I’m more sympathetic with G4Ps than Phoenix; the world of gay sex is complex, and as I noted in a 1/17/11 posting (“A note on gay for pay”), gayness is sometimes viewed as rooted in desire, sometimes as a matter of sexual acts, and people not infrequently go back and forth between these two different configurations.
Some summary on G4Ps:
(1) many G4Ps are strictly tops, that is, insertive partners in anal sex (Rockway and Champion, for instance); some are versatile; and some prefer to bottom (see “A note on gay for pay”) so as not to have to manage an erection in anal sex (note also that a considerable number of frankly straight men and and some women find being penetrated anally pleasurable; so it makes sense that G4Ps might find the bottom role in fact “easy”)
(2) many G4P actors (a) are enthusiastic and affectionate, fully engaged in their parts (Rockway again); but some (like, alas, Champion) (b) are lackluster in their performances; and some (Ken Ryker in some of his roles) (c) project something approaching contempt for their partners, presumably because they configure the interactions as Stud vs. Fag (where Stud is good, masculine, powerful, and Fag is bad, feminine, weak)
One of the porn shots in my XBlog posting on Champion (photo #4, showing him being fellated) has him apparently engaged mentally in something other than the business at hand. (In #5, showing him penetrating another man anally, it’s Champion’s partner, another G4P, who seems to be disengaged.)
But because of cases like (2a), and the unfortunately many pornstars, whether frankly gay or G4P, who just aren’t very good actors, and the unfortunately frequent occasions when a pornstar doesn’t ignite with the partner they’ve been assigned in a scene, it’s not generally possible to distinguish G4P actors from frankly gay ones just by looking at their performances.
