More for Xmas

An annual feature on this blog looks at Christmas music — from the sacred and serious to the trashy. Now John McIntyre, on his Baltimore Sun blog, invites opinion:

Tell me what Christmas music you find most loathsome.

McIntyre asks whether there is anything worse than “The Little Drummer Boy”. That song gets lots of other votes (including mine), but there are other candidates, like “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”.

Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer — without a doubt.

I’m not sure of the rules of this, since McIntyre was excluding some songs as merely fatuous, but The Christmas Shoes clearly is the worst song ever recorded under the guise of Christmas music.

If we are restricting this to the few dozen songs that get played repeatedly every Christmas, then my personal choice is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. As a child I was deeply offended by the other reindeer, who had laughed and called him names, suddenly pretending to like Rudolph because he helped Santa, and my feelings have not changed. My distaste does not extend to the excellent animated Christmas special, which I did not see until I was an adult with a child of my own.
