Cock tease

(About male models, sexuality, and underwear. Not much language in here — but there is some.)

Not all male models do nude shots, and a fair number who do nevertheless avoid what’s usually called full-frontal nudity (though in fact what’s being avoided is shots with any significant display of the penis, no matter from what angle or viewpoint — what I’ll call dick shots). These models will do nude shots, but only from the rear or with the penis concealed naturally by some other body part. Some models who avoid dick shots nevertheless happily pose for shots in which their dicks are ostentatiously concealed (by a hand or some object) and shots in which they flagrantly display themselves just short of exposing the root of the penis; these are two types of what I’ll call cock tease shots, in which the homoerotic undercurrents of nude male photography are elevated to central aspects of the pictures.

Australian male model Daniel Garofali has made something of a career in cock tease shots (though he does many other sorts of modeling as well), working with photographers who seek out homoerotic content.

(I have to confess that I wasn’t sure whether to post this material on this blog or on AZBlogX. There’s nothing that’s, strictly speaking, X-rated, but some of it is intensely (and intentionally) homoerotic. Well, you’ve been warned.)

Here he is working as a “plain” underwear model, for Aussie Bum (but notice his left hand alongside his dick, so the photo is hardly innocent):

From the Most Beautful Men site:

Daniel Garofali, born January 8, 1987, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, is an Australian model and dancer.

Garofali lived and worked as a dancer on a cruise liner when I was 18 and got his first break when he performed with Australian pop star, Nikki Webster, in her shows. His exposure ended up getting agencies and photographers interested in him.

With impeccable physique and chiselled features, Garofali has made hearts flutter in campaigns, photoshoots, and TV commercials for “LG Plasma”, ” Johnson & Johnson”, “YVY Mag”, “DNA Mag”, Rick Day Photography, the face of the new “Marcuse Swimwear”, as well as being named one of Cleo’s Top 50 Eligible Bachelors in 2010.

Garofali lists his hobbies and interests as acting, hiphop, contemporary dance, jazz ballet, tap, classical ballet, funk, musical theatre, singing (baritone), rollerblading, horseriding, soccer, rockclimbing, swimming, athletics, basketball, and football.

(Just in case you were thinking that all that dance, music, and theatre means that he’s gay, he piles on all that athletic activity. Of course you can be a major jock and still be queer.)

In any case, he’s a serious hunk.

Here he is nude, but with his dick “naturally”, even negligently, concealed by his right leg (photo by James Demitri):

(Elsewhere you can find nude shots from the rear, displaying his handsome butt.)

On to ostentatious concealment, as in this shot by Kevin McDermott, where he’s covering his dick with his left hand:

  (#3)

And in this shot, using a ball:

  (#4)

That brings us to cock tease shots, in particular those in which Garofali pulls down his underwear (or a swimsuit) as far as he can without going X-rated. There are hundreds of these; any number of photographers have enjoyed hs exhibitionism. A simple example:

  (#5)

(We could think of this as as a pubic-hair shot.)

Finally, the really flagrant stuff, in particular the portfolio “Aussie” by Rick Day . A set of outrageous pubic-hair shots. Here’s a montage of four of them:

  (#6-9)

In #6 Garofali not only has his briefs pulled down, but is also doing a pits ‘n’ tits presentation and appears to be sniffing his right armpit. In #7 he’s stuck his right hand in his briefs, nasty boy. #8 and #9 have other poses; in #9 his briefs are down about as far as they can go on this side of the X line.

(Garofali’s facial expression seems always to be intense, sometimes seductively, sometimes challengingly. I assume the man can smile, but we don’t see him doing it in photographs of him.)

Rick Day does nude photography, including dick shots, but he tends to parcel out the dick sparingly. As I wrote on AZBlogX in 2010:

Some male photographers withhold a whole actual dick from us for some time before hitting us with an explicit picture, which then gets its power from our having spent some time assessing the men without the distraction of his dick. So Rick Day (who focuses on very masculine bodies — and favors faces and butts as well as dicks) goes through about twenty pages of Pioneers before giving us, suddenly, a page filled with an uncut dick in loving detail. And then switches focus from picture to picture, not dwelling too long on dicks.

Bonus feature: another side of Daniel Garofali, in Luke Austin’s portfolio “The Death of Garofali” (here). The terminal photo:

  (#10)

There are, of course, photos of him modeling men’s fashions in the more or less conventional way.

And a lingustic footnote, on cock tease. From Wikipedia:

Cock tease (sometimes cock-tease or cocktease or also prick-tease) is derisive sexual slang used to describe a woman who acts in a sexual manner to seduce men without actually fulfilling the sexual actions. The term has been in use in Great Britain and the United States since the 19th century. More recently, it has also been used to describe a man behaving in a similar manner, especially a straight man deemed by a gay man to be behaving flirtatiously towards him with no intention of going any further.

Whether Garofali is straight or gay, he’s certain doing a cock-tease number in a great many of his photos; he’s not going to give us his dick.

(The montage and the death scene were posted on AZBlogX on 1/31/12.)

This is the chest stubble thing I don’t get.

    My response:

The chest stubble thing is a careful compromise between two presentations of the male body. I assume that Garofali is naturally at least moderately hairy — but that’s not acceptable in male models, and in addition a fair number of gay men don’t like it. On the other hand, shaving to smoothness (as many male models and some gay pornstars do) can be seen as insufficiently masculine, or even feminine (in gay men it can be interpreted as youthful or twinkish); Garofali presents himself as intensely masculine, so a certain amount of stubble stands in for serious chest hair. It takes some work to maintain the stubble at just the right level, by the way.

I’m sure it does! We’ve been watching a show called Banshee, and I’m always amazed at how his body hair is always the same. But thanks for the explanation. It’s kind of starting to grow on me, even though it looks itchy.

      My answer:

It is itchy; I can vouch for this from experience. Untrimmed hair is soft; trimmed hair is prickly. I like the way trimmed hair looks, but I don’t like to deal with it. Similar problem with beard stubble, which really turns me on, but can be a trial for any act that involves the guy’s face.
