A very silly footnote to my “Back on top” posting on Language Log (which was already supremely silly, though it did have something, a little something, to do with Language Log): a photo of two devoted AZites, bathed in AZ-pink glow, at Ohio State’s Mirror Lake (it’s really a small pond; “lake” is a bit of nomenclatural inflation) some years ago.
Jacques was much taken with the shirts, which were being marketed by a mass-oriented store with upscale pretensions (JC Penney, I think), but he couldn’t believe that a retailer in mid-Ohio would be pushing trendy Arizona-wear, so he had to assume that it was somehow directed at me. A sweet thought, but not a particularly clear one. Eventually he got a shirt, and wore it to shreds.
