Another in a series of postings on the Zwicky family, this time a death notice, for my first cousin Eleanor Zwicky Justice, news that came to me from my other first cousin Eleanor, Eleanor Severin Houck (daughter of my aunt Bertha Zwicky Severin), who got it in snail mail from Eleanor Justice’s younger brother Henry A. (for Arnold) Zwicky in Greensboro NC. The cousinhood network works, but slowly: Eleanor Zwicky Justice died back in May.
The cousinhood has always been concentrated around Reading PA, but with branches north to St. John NB, south to Anderson SC, and west to Palo Alto CA.
Eleanor Zwicky Justice was the middle child of my uncle Fred (10 years older than my father) and his wife Lucille: Fred C. Zwicky, then Eleanor, then Henry (who’s just a bit younger than I am).
From the Greensboro (NC) News & Record on 6/2/16:
Eleanor Zwicky Justice, 78, passed away Monday, May 30, 2016 at her residence.
… Eleanor was born May 19, 1938 in Greensboro to the late Fred and Lucille Zwicky. She graduated from Women’s College (now UNCG [Univ. of NC, Greensboro]) in 1960 with a degree in primary education. She taught first grade in schools at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base, a military base in Germany, and also at Irving Park Elementary and Greensboro Day School. In addition to her parents, Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Justice. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Fred C. Zwicky. She is survived by her brother, Henry A. Zwicky, two stepsons, Craig Justice (Terri), and Stephen Justice (Beth), as well as step grandsons, Zach and Will Justice. In addition, she is survived by nieces, Ginny, Cathy, Marian and Alison.
She was much loved by the children she taught, a number of whom left messages at the funeral home’s site.
I tried to find more information about Robert Justice, but was frustrated by a development in these days of genealogical interest: private firms have bought up the obituary sections of newspaper archives and now charge for net access to them. I don’t know which North Carolina Robert Justice Eleanor was married to, and I’m unwilling to pay for information about a bunch of them. So it’s back to snail mail to Henry.
And that’s the Zwicky news for the moment.
[Nearly instant update, about Robert Higgins Justice, thanks to Brian Kane, who has a subscription to ancestry dot com and found the Greensboro obit for him. Justice died Sunday, May 9, 1999, at his residence, age 77 (about 15 years older than my cousin Eleanor). From the obit:
A native of Greenville, he spent most of his life in Wilmington, before moving to Greensboro, in 1966. Mr. Justice was the vice-president and general sales manager of Odell Hardware. He entered the military in 1942, as a private and served in the Infantry in the European Theater of Operations (England, France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg and Germany). He received a Battlefield Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in Infantry, March 10, 1945. He then served in the U.S. Army Reserve for 27 years and retired as a Major.
He was active in church, community, and veterans’ organizations.]
