“that’s why they make the big bucks” is often intended ironically, that is realizing someone has a hard/important job and (even though perhaps superior in rank) is not paid that much.

Very true. But in today’s follow-up it turns out that Ruthie actually believes that school teachers make a lot of money, and her grandfather tries to set her straight.
