I x NY

Today’s Bizarro, another cartoon idea from Cliff Harris:

All variants on

I ♥ NY

(for this New York logo and others, see here).

For the Godzilla figure, the # is to be read as “pound” (rather than “number” or “hash”). From the Wikipedia entry:

Number sign is a name for the symbol #, which is used for a variety of purposes including, in some countries, the designation of a number (for example, “#1” stands for “number one”).

In Commonwealth English, the symbol is usually called the hash and the corresponding telephone key is called the hash key. In American English and Quebec English, the symbol is usually called the pound sign (outside the US, this term often refers instead to the British currency symbol “£”) and the telephone key is called the pound key. In Canadian English, this key is most frequently called the number sign key. Beginning in the 1960s, telephone engineers have attempted to coin a special name for this symbol, with variant spellings including octothorp, octothorpe, octathorp, octotherp, octathorpe, and octatherp; none of these have become widely accepted. [The article lists other alternative names.]

I think my favorite variant in the strip is

I ♥ Y

with its cartoon Yorkshireman.

Actually, some of the interesting stuff is not on the T-shirts. The names of establishments are [PI]4U, GimmeGimme, K^2 [K-squared], Dingo, plus the sushi restaurant that has a display of “dead raw fish”. Now, what semantic overlap makes “dead raw fish” nonstandard and funny? And the driver of the cab is an alien–the one-eyed, gastropod kind, not the one that puts massage beads on the seat.

Piraro’s cartoons usually have a lot of things going on in them other than the ones I choose to comment about.

(“K2” is one of his “hidden symbols”, a reference to his two children.)
